The Death of Michael Jackson

The world watched and waited as conflicting stories were reported.

“Michael Jackson Collapses”

“Michael Jackson Has Died”

“Michael Jackson in a Coma”

And then, finally, confirmation: “Michael Jackson Dead at Age 50”

As one of my colleagues pointed out, “You will always remember where you were when Michael Jackson died.”  I was at work, sitting at my desk.

The World Reacts

The world reacted as it often does when confronted with the finality of death.

“He is finally at peace.  Michael Jackson is a legend.  He will always be the King of Pop.  RIP Michael.”

I was deeply disturbed and saddened by the reaction I witnessed.  It seems as if world creates its own reality, its own God, in the face of death.  Peace, rest, heaven, and paradise for all who have passed.

Though I do not wish to be disrespectful, I desperately want the world to know the truth – the truth about death, the truth about life, the truth about sin, the truth about God, the truth of the Gospel.  Beyond this world, peace only comes to those who have been reconciled to their Creator by the blood of Christ.

I know nothing regarding Michael Jackson’s spiritual condition, nor do I care to speculate.  What I do know is that people around me, people around the world, have been sobered by yesterday’s events.  Do Christians not have an obligation to, lovingly and respectfully, share the truth of Gospel with the world around them, even in times such as these?  Especially in times such as these?

Truth

Below are two reactions, among many, that I found to be striking:

John Piper stated the following on Twitter: “Farrah Fawcett (62), Michael Jackson (50) and 150,000 others: "A flower of the field; the wind passes, and it is gone."

Piper on the death of MJ

Piper was, of course, quoting Psalm 103:

As for man, his days are like grass;
he flourishes like a flower of the field;
16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
and its place knows it no more.  (Psalm 103:15-16, ESV)

Justin Taylor had this to say:

He is dead at the age of 50. He had everything the world offered–but no Jesus.

I remember once looking at the liner notes from an album of his, and he quoted the final lines from William Ernest Henley’s famous poem, Invictus:

I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Those are not the words you want written on your tombstone.

The King of Pop

Michael Jackson dead at the age of 50.  He was an incredibly talented man, beloved my millions, and will be remembered as a legend.

Still…the truth remains.

Hello Class…Santa Isn’t Real

FOXNews.com – Outrage After Teacher Tells 7-Year-Olds Santa Is Not Real – International News | News of the World | Middle East News | Europe News

This short news story is a must read. Imagine sending your children off to school only to have them return home in tears with the new-found knowledge that Santa Claus is NOT REAL! Apparently this happened in a British primary school where a teacher told a class of 25 students, “It’s your parents who leave out presents on Christmas Day.” Unfortunately, the story was not accompanied by a video documenting the students’ reactions.

How have you chosen to handle the “Santa Situation” in your home. Have you told your kids that Santa isn’t real? Did you believe in Santa when you were a child? Should children be told the truth about Santa (painful as it may be) or allowed to believe that he exists? Please comment…

Lies of Our Culture

Lately, I have been thinking a great deal about the world around us and the lies it tells. At times lies are subtly whispered into my ears. Other times I hear the world shouting them at the top of its lungs. Each and every day we are exposed to messages that cannot be reconciled with a Biblical, Christian worldview.

The following is a short list that came to my mind:

  1. You are a good person.
  2. Humanity is basically good.
  3. A loving God wouldn’t send me to hell. *see #1
  4. A loving God wouldn’t allow evil. *see #2
  5. Jesus was simply a good teacher, a good man.
  6. Satan doesn’t exist.
  7. One must accept the claims of Christianity merely by blind faith.
  8. Christianity is unreasonable.
  9. The Gospel is green.
  10. The Gospel is about the poor, the oppressed.
  11. The Gospel is not about the poor, the oppressed.
  12. It’s your money.
  13. 75% of Americans are Christians.
  14. Multiple paths – One God
  15. Jesus: THE way, truth, life? You are offensive, hateful, and intolerant.
  16. There is no absolute truth.
  17. All Christians are republicans.
  18. You are not “called” to do evangelism. You are not gifted to tell others about the Gospel.
  19. Church is about you.
  20. All Christian music is good.
  21. God is not in control.
  22. It is silly and stupid to believe in the stories of the Bible.
  23. Christianity is a crutch.

Agree? Disagree? What other lies does our world/culture tell?

Belief Doesn’t Change Truth

What you believe doesn’t matter. Nope, not even a little bit. Take some time and allow that to soak in.

Why do we struggle so much with this concept in the United States? One’s belief, strong and devout as it may be, doesn’t have the ability to change or influence truth. I may believe that I am a millionaire, but each month as the bank statements and bills roll in, a very different truth is revealed.

When I told you about Jesus Christ, that he died on a cross and rose again three days later in order that you and I might be saved from God’s just judgement, you gave me a funny response. You said, “What you believe is good for you and what I believe is good for me.” No it isn’t! What does that even mean? How can that be? What if that which I believe is wrong – is it good for me then? It certainly isn’t good for you if what I believe is true.

You see, our beliefs can’t change the truth. Have you convinced yourself that you have the ability to create your own truth? My belief in God, for example, does not cause God to exist, nor does your belief that God does not exist cause God’s existence to cease. The truth of God’s existence rests outside of our beliefs. One of us, I fear, is wrong.

What you believe is good for you and what I believe is good for me. Wouldn’t it be great if this were true!? I could believe anything I wanted without being wrong. In fact, I wouldn’t have to believe in anything at all! Each of us could worship our own ‘god’ (or lack thereof) in absolute truth.

Unfortunately, it just isn’t that easy. Perhaps you should put a bit more thought into what you believe.
